When we think about our life and how we can make it more successful, we usually think about goals we want to accomplish, that dream job with a corner office, or even the accomplishment of purchasing a dream home. If I were to tell you, that to make your life more successful, you should try visiting the zoo, you might think I was crazy!

As I spent my day volunteering at our local zoo in Baton Rouge, LA, I had a revelation of how this park was beneficial to my overall well-being while in the moment. I felt unexplainable joy!
The Benefits of Volunteering:
-
Provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
-
You get to meet new people and learn from their experiences.
-
It provides courage, strength, and confidence.
-
You are providing a service to your community.
-
Exercise and mobility.
-
Appreciation for your community and the people who live there.
One of my goals for this year was to get out of my comfort zone. One of the best ways to get out of your comfort zone is by lending a hand in the community. You are exploring and learning new things, you’re actively serving in the community and helping others with their mission.
I chose BREC of Baton Rouge which was partnering with the Baton Rouge Zoo to volunteer with. They were having a ribbon-cutting event to showcase the first phase of the zoo's improvements, which included a new entrance, in addition to the Greenwood Community Park.

I have been following the discussion of plans to move the zoo from its current location to a more popular area around Baton Rouge, thankfully their efforts were not deemed appropriate. The location of the Baton Rouge Zoo being in North Baton Rouge, is the perfect fit and I’m glad they are staying put!
I am a shy person; however, I’ve gotten a little more comfortable over the years with meeting new people and being in different environments. I was still a little nervous before arriving, but I was able to do some anxiety techniques to calm myself down.
After checking in and changing into the volunteer shirt that was provided, a friendly lady spoke to me and that broke the ice. Everyone was helpful and friendly. We worked together to put out snacks for all the volunteers and waited until a bigger group arrived before getting our assignments.
So it was the perfect opportunity to mingle before our work day began.
While talking to a group of ladies, I took in the weather which was so nice! It did get hot that day, but a nice breeze and low humidity made it even better. I was made aware of, right away my spirits being lifted, even though I was already in a good mood.
Be in the moment and recognize your blessings when they come.
The Baton Rouge Zoo has many new things to offer. They highlighted the entrance in this phase because the old entrance was very congested and it was hard to get into the parking lot. Now the zoo’s entrance is much easier to navigate.
As a BREC Volunteer, my assignment was to assist other volunteers in checking in, issuing name tags, and getting their volunteer shirts. I didn’t realize how many schools and employers require community service hours for graduation or paid incentives.
As a volunteer, you are also required to assist the other company, Baton Rouge Zoo. Even though I was a BREC volunteer, I was happy to be there and help wherever needed. The young lady I met earlier stayed and helped prepare the front entrance for the ribbon cutting. Unfortunately, we were not able to stick around for the ribbon cutting, for we had to be at our post for the next shift of volunteers.
Now that I’m aware of what all the zoo has to offer since I haven’t been there in a long time. I’ll be more prepared.
Here are a few items that you will need to make your zoo visit more comfortable.
-
a portable fan on those hot days
-
a wagon to haul your things
-
insulated backpack to keep bottled water cold
-
comfortable walking shoes
-
sunglasses
-
hat or visor
-
sunscreen
I left my sunglasses in the car and regret it to this day. The sun was bright and hot as the day went on. Despite that, I ended up having a great time volunteering, and meeting new people, while celebrating the zoo and park.
